The Canadian Investor Protection Fund exists to protect your cash and securities in the unlikely event that your investment dealer becomes bankrupt.  Investment dealer bankruptcy is very rare.  That is because each of CIPF's Sponsors, the Securities Commissions, and CIPF require that CIPF members comply with a wide range of strict regulatory procedures.

Investment Dealers Association (IDA)

The IDA's mission is to "protect investors, foster market integrity and enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the Canadian capital markets".  Their membership includes "more than 200 investment dealers who play an essential role in the Canadian economy by raising capital for governments and businesses and by helping individuals and institutions invest with confidence in open and fair capital markets."

The IDA has also been involved in industry education for over half a century, offering courses to develop the skills of investment professionals.  They have offices in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.
